Long Arm FAQ

Long Arm Services FAQ

About Me:

Hello! My name is Sheila and I am the owner of Quiltiful, and a computerized longarm quilter. When you’re ready to book your quilt with me, the first step is to fill out the Quiltiful Client Intake Form. This gets you in the queue (don’t worry - my turnaround is under three weeks!)

*Please note: Quilts enter my queue in the order that I receive them.

I love chatting with my clients, so if you have any questions about the booking process, or about getting your quilt professionally finished please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Email quiltiful@gmail.com.

If this is your first time using a longarmer and you are unsure how it all works, send me an email, I would love to walk you through the process!

How does this work?

You create an amazing quilt top and backing and decide it's time to have it quilted! Just fill out my Client Sign Up form.  Click here for the form.

Once I receive your information, I'll contact you to discuss the quilt design, cost and arrange to have the quilt dropped off or mailed to me. I quilt up your quilt and contact you when it’s complete to arrange for payment at pick up or prior to the quilt being mailed back to you.

How much does it cost?

My specialty is all-over edge-to-edge quilting, which means that the same pattern will be repeated over the entire quilt. This is accomplished with my computerized long arm machine, meaning the pattern will be beautifully executed with perfectly round circles and the pointiest of points! My prices are listed below.

*Please note: all prices are in Canadian dollars.

Edge to Edge (E2E): 0.3 cents/square inch

Minimum $50 charge

Thread Included*

Trimming Included, if desired

Taxes Not Included

E2E plus 1 Border: 0.4 cents/square inch

Minimum $55 charge

Thread Included*

Trimming Included, if desired

Taxes Not Included

E2E plus 2 Borders: 0.45 cents/square inch

Minimum $60 charge

Thread Included*

Trimming Included, if desired

Taxes Not Included

For an example, if you had a quilt that measured 60" x 72" you would figure out the cost as follows:

Edge to Edge: 60 x 72 = 4,320 square inches x $0.03 = $129.60

E2E plus 1 Border: 60 x 72 = 4,320 square inches x $0.04 = $172.80

E2E plus 2 Borders: 60 x 72 = 4,320 square inches x $0.045 = $194.40

What about Batting?

You can send batting with your quilt top and backing or you can buy batting from me. I stock the following 96" wide rolls:

  • Nature's Touch 80/20 w/s Batting  - $6.00 / ft
  • Nature's Touch Bamboo Blend Batting w/s  - $8.00 / ft

For a quilt that is 60" x 72", the cost of the batting would be as follows:

  • 80/20 - $31.50
  • Bamboo - $42.00

If there is another type of batting that you would like me to special order for you, we can talk!

What is the best way for me to make sure my quilt is ready to be quilted?

If you want great results from your long arm experience, there are a few critical things you can do:

  • Press the top well.  Clip any loose threads you see.  Mark the top with a piece of masking/painter’s tape.
  • Ensure your backing is at least 4 inches larger on all sides compared to your quilt. For example, if your quilt is 70"x 96" then your backing should measure 78"x 104" minimum.  It’s ok if it’s larger!
  • Batting needs to be at least 3 inches larger on all sides compared to your quilt.  For example, if your quilt is 70"x 96" then your batting should measure 76"x 102".

How do I get my quilt(s) to you?

If you happen to be local, you can drop off and pick up your quilt(s!) in person. If you’re from away, you can mail me your quilt. Once it’s quilted, I will obtain a shipping quote and add it to your invoice. When the invoice is paid, I will return your quilt to you via Canada Post with tracking, insurance, and a required signature.

How big does my backing have to be?

In order for the long arm to work its magic, the backing should be at least 4" bigger than your quilt top on all four sides. This means that if you have a 60" x 72" quilt top, your backing should be at least 68" x 80". If your backing is directional, you can also mark its top with a piece of tape. That way everything will line up as you had hoped.
